Scientific Aggressive Fighting Techniques of America or S.A.F.T.A. is a martial art created by Lew Hicks. It is disputed whether or not the style was taught to Naval Special Warfare.
Hicks was a student of Jerry Peterson, the founder of S.C.A.R.S.. S.C.A.R.S. is a combat modified verion of San soo Kung Fu and was taught to United States Navy SEALs. Hicks claims to also hold black belts in Shorin-Ryu, Aikido, San Soo and Greco-Roman wrestling. Professional Competitions "Big" John (sometimes spelled Jon) Hess, the cofounder of S.A.F.T.A. fought in Ultimate Fighting Championship 5 and beat his opponent Andy Anderson by TKO. The fight is considered one of the dirtiest in UFC history, as Hess raked Anderson's eyes, breaking one of the few rules that governed the UFC at the time. It is rumored Anderson lost partial eye-sight due the gouge. Hess then fought Vitor Belfort a year later at SB 2-SuperBrawl 2 and lost by KO. He has not fought professionally since his loss, however he stated in a 2005 interview with Sherdog that if he was allowed to come back he would be "world champ" and that Belfort was "on steroids" when he beat him. |
