Gilbert Yvel PDF

Gilbert "The Hurricane" Yvel (June 30, 1976-) is a Dutch mixed martial arts fighter. He is associated with the Golden Glory training camp in the Netherlands. He has a professional MMA record of 27-10-1 as of June 12, 2005.

Yvel is known as an accomplished stand-up fighter, possessed of a full arsenal of strikes and kicks as befitting his Thai-boxing training, and famous for his signature "flying knee" strike. His grappling is sub-par; opponents usually attempt to take him off his feet and wrestle with him.

Yvel caused controversy in November 2004 when during a fight with Atte Backman, he knocked the referee to the ground and subsequently kicked him as he lay prone on the mat. Yvel was disqualified for his actions.

Previous to this Yvel has been disqualified twice, against Karimula Barkalaev in May 1998 for biting and in September 2001 (PRIDE 16) in a bout with Don Frye for eye gouging. Several times during the match with Frye, Yvel can be seen raking his thumbs across Frye's eyes. After several warnings for this, and for holding the ring ropes to prevent Frye from taking him down to the mat, Yvel was disqualified after at least one assistant referee - located outside the ring - directly observed an instance of these apparently-intentional fouls.

These incidents have left Yvel with a reputation as an aggressive and sometimes dirty fighter.
