The Chinese martial arts and wisdom traditions are said to have their beginnings in the Shaolin Temple of ancient China. Shaolin can be translated as "young" forest. The Shaolin monks were known for their contemplative approach to living. They used physical movement such as Kung-Fu and T’ai Chi, as a form of meditation. Their contemplative studies also included poetry, music, calligraphy, philosophy, medicine, and environmental research.
